Female Poker Players on the Rise
A new study by eCorgra, an online gaming industry standards authority, found that the number of female poker players has risen to 30%, up from 15% in 2004. This study is the largest to date, involving nearly 11,000 players from 96 countries.
It seems that the ability to play anonymously online is partially responsible for the rise in female players. Yara Wortmann, founder of a poker and sports betting site, explains that “a lot of women prefer the online environment in order to learn the game without risking any derogatory remarks from other players”.
The increase in female participation extends to the corporate side of gaming as well, with more and more women occupying leading positions.
