WSOP and Milwaukee’s best announce new Player of the Year Award
The World Series of Poker® Presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light announced criteria for the official 2007 WSOP Player of the Year award today.
The Milwaukee’s Best Light Player of the Year award will be presented to the player accumulating the most points throughout the 2007 WSOP. Points are earned based upon finishing position in all open bracelet events with the exception of the Main Event and $50,000 HORSE Championship. HORSE is an acronym for five different types of poker.
“We now have a triple crown at the WSOP – the Main Event and HORSE titles and the Player of the Year designation,†said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the World Series of Poker. “This award puts all poker players on a level playing field and underscores our belief that every bracelet event is important, regardless of field size, buy-in or variety of game.â€
In addition to an official trophy, the Milwaukee’s Best Light Player of the Year will receive entry to various WSOP competitions over the next year. The winner will receive $5,000 for travel and accommodations, plus buy-ins for the Main Events at the World Series of Poker Europe, a World Series of Poker Circuit Event of choice and the 2008 World Series of Poker Presented by Milwaukee’s Best Light.
“This is another example of Miller Brewing Company’s commitment to the WSOP,†said Ty Stewart, director of sponsorship and licensing for Harrah’s Entertainment. “Miller’s multi-year sponsorship of the tournament and the ESPN broadcasts have been major factors in the explosive growth of the WSOP. This award is sure to create incremental excitement and give our growing fan base a new way to follow the action.â€
According to Dockery Clark, director, sports and alliance marketing for Miller Brewing Company, “We’re thrilled to sponsor the Milwaukee’s Best Light Player of the Year Award to identify the best performance over the course of the entire WSOP. With any bracelet being so difficult to win, players have asked for recognition of cumulative accomplishment over a series of events.â€

First place in an event is worth 100 points, second 75, third 60, fourth 55, fifth 50, sixth 45, seventh 40, eighth 35, and ninth 30. Tenth through 18th place finishers will earn 20 points each, 19th through 27th will earn 10 points and all other in-the-money finishers will earn 5 points. In the case of a tie, total cash won will be the determining factor.
