Self-published BetonSports ‘tell all’ book released

August 15th, 2007

betonsportsbook.jpgIf you’ve ever wondered what life was like on the inside of an online gaming company in the early, heady days of the market, before MoneyMaker won the WSOP, before the UIGEA brought the US poker frenzy down to earth, you might be interested in reading the new e-book “The Rise and Fall of BetOnSports”.

BOS was one of the primary players in the early days of online gaming, and their dizzying fall from prominence that culminated in the arrest of their CEO David Carruthers by US officials in 2006 should make for an interesting narrative. The book, penned under a pseudonym, is being self-published as an e-book through Luna Press.

The description on Luna reads: “An inside look at the online gaming industry with specific focus about BetOnSports.com through the eyes of a former executive consultant who shares details about sex, drugs, gambling, illicit activities, and good laughs. Read up on how the controlled madness of one of the original giants of the online gaming industry mixed in with a little bit of insanity and poor decisions led to the demise.”

How much of the book is fact and how much fiction remains a question, especially considering the anonymous author. Regardless, the insight of someone who apparently was on the inside of the industry will probably be entertaining at worst, and deeply informative at best.

Archive pick: Value betting the river, no limit hold em cash -

Game type: 1/2 No Limit Cash Game
Your image: Fairly Aggressive
Opponent's image: Solid, a little tricky
Your hand: As Qh

This hand is from the archives and originally appeared on 8/21/07. View the original quiz and comments here

The setup: You're fairly new to this table and you picked up a pot quick when you flopped a set and won a decent multi-way pot. You've been fairly active since, seeing a lot of flops cheap and playing for the win on the flop or turn in a couple of spots.

This hand you're dealt AQo UTG and you decide to limp. The button limps and both blinds play. You flop top pair:

Qd 7h 6d

The SB leads out for $6. The BB folds. You make it $24 and the button folds. The SB calls. The turn gives you two pair with the Ac. The SB checks and you pop $40 into $54. The SB flat calls.

The turn comes the 10c. The SB checks again. There's $134 in the middle. Do you value bet here and if so, for how much?
