Online gambling companies shifting operations to Malta
In a testament to the impact recent UK legislation regarding online gaming advertising has had on the industry, The Malta Times reported today that Intercasino, William Hill, Littlewoods, Playboy Casino and Virgin Games are just a few of the internet poker and casino companies that will start operating from Malta in the near future.
Malta, which was whitelisted by the UK Gambling Commission, will be exempt from regulations prohibiting online gaming firms from advertising in the UK. The country currently has 84 licensed internet gambling operators, with a letter of intent issued to 76 others and 36 companies with pending applications.
Officials expect that they will eventually see businesses move their physical operations to Malta as well. “Our regulations are very much in line with the EU’s, and we have shown that we are capable of protecting operators - so it won’t be long before the physical operations move to Malta,” Mario Galea, chief executive of the Lotteries Gaming Authority, told The Times yesterday.
