Negreanu vs internet poker, continued

Daniel Negreanu continues to dip his toes in the high stakes NL pool over at PokerStars, and the results so far seem to support his early conclusion that the top players there aren’t worth getting too excited about. While anything can obviously happen in the short term, it seems like Negreanu is willing to devote a bit more time (possibly at PokerStar’s request) to promoting the games, and that’s going to result in more hands like this:

There’s a long thread about these sessions over at Daniel’s forum, Full Contact Poker, where they’re mostly taking obviously delight in Daniel’s success to date.

Also cataloging the carnage are the railbirds over at 2+2 in carious threads, this being the one for the latest session (beware, it quickly devolves into a discussion about what leveling means and whether or not the person who asked that was leveling). The best argument for Daniel continuing his success comes on page 2:

Daniel has been one of the best donkament players when he has applied himself to tourneys, I think if he applied himself to NL whether it was live or on the net he’d experience similar success. His style in tournaments isn’t to push and hope to get lucky, he plays better post flop than most of the players and has a unique style that is perfectly suited for good structure NL tournaments. He is also a good enough poker player that if he wanted to find a style that would work in cash games he surely would.

I have played pretty much all of the “great” live NL players, I have also played most of these superstar internet players a bunch whether it was HU or ring, and in my opinion if Daniel N decided that he wanted to focus on NL cash games be it on the Net or Live, he’d be a pretty big winner and probably one of the top players.

With the big games on Tilt drying up, maybe Stars is vying to become the center for online high stakes action, and Dan is part of their plan. We’ll see.
