A Wayne County Circuit Court judge granted a temporary restraining order against the state’s plan to shut down casinos in the recent budget-balancing turbulence.
Judge William Giovan said the the casinos could operate without state-employeed board inspectors while the state works on the budget.
Giovan said the statute allows suspension of the casinos’ licenses only when the public safety or health are jeopardized, that there is no reason to believe those are in jeopardy and that city and state police are available for patrol.
Greektown Casino spokesperson Roger Martin called the decision “a victory for the 7,000 workers at the three Detroit casinos that will not be furloughed, and it’s a victory for Michigan public schools and public safety in the City of Detroit.”
