The new MGM Grand Detroit opens today, 27 years after the reunification of Germany, and less than one week after fears that Detroit casinos would be suspended in a battle of the budget.
“If it weren’t for the casinos, the governmental financial crisis would have been worse than it is now,” said Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano.
Actually, there was a pre-opening gala last night with more than 1,000 VIP guests, including Detroit socialites, politicians and eager residents of the region. Fireworks celebrated not only the casino, but the $800 million MGM has invested in Detroit.
MGM Detroit is one of three casinos that opened temporary digs in the City in 1999 and 2000, but permanent construction was delayed for years by lawsuits. Motor City Casino opened in June, and Greektown Casino plans to open next October.
The casinos generate millions of dollars in tax revenue and provide thousands of jobs.
