Atlantic City: The Sands is dead, long live the Sands

In under 20 seconds last night, The Sands Casino crumbled after 26 years of serving Atlantic City, and after nearly one year of closure. Leaving tens of thousands of pounds of, well, not actual sand, the demolition leaves room for the construction of a new Sands, on which Boardwalk ground will be broken sometime next year.
The demolition follows the rejection of a last-minute injunction filed by a neighboring hotel which was concerned about environmental pollution and possible asbestos release into the air.
Pinnacle Entertainment, which purchased — and then liquidated — The Sands last year from billionaire Carl Ichahn, offers a video of the demolition on its website.
Chairman and CEO of Pinnacle Entertainment, Daniel Lee, said of the new Sands, “It’ll be a spectacular property, we’re studying the best of the top hotels in Las Vegas and around the world, and there will be some new things that are not done anywhere else.”
