An article published today by online political news site Politico offers up a great overview of the current climate in Washington D.C. in regards to online gaming. The story, ‘Online gambling draws opposition‘, sketches a clear and balanced picture of the relevant issues, participants and probable outcomes surrounding the issue of online poker regulation. Excerpt:

It’s facing a predictable head-to-head fight with family and evangelical organizations that say gambling leads to tragic addiction and compromises the moral fabric of the family.

A more muscular counter, however, could come from a coalition of professional sports leagues — from basketball to football — that also oppose the bill.

The proposal’s tainted past could also hinder its passage. In 2000, Jack Abramoff was instrumental in helping defeat an Internet gambling ban on the House floor.
