19-year-old university student Daniel Booth played his way into the Adelaide Hold’em Championship Series, bypassing a $3,000 entry fee perhaps out of reach for a part-time supermarket employee and walking away with top prize of $96,000 from a $366,000 prize pool.
“I never dreamed I would win this tournament especially since I was up against so many of the world’s best,” said the commerce student, who beat out 123 other players, including celebrity draw Joe Hachem of Melbourne, winner of the 2005 World Series of Poker. “I’ve only recently started playing poker and taking it seriously since the poker league started in Adelaide pubs and hotels in June of this year.”
“He just dominated,” said National Poker League organizer Brock Gledhill.
Booth, a level-headed teen, conducted interviews on the job, without failing to help direct customers to the proper sections of the store. He plans to continue his studies, buy a used car and invest his winnings under advice from his parents.
