Norway’s Culture Minister Trond Giske has officially released his proposal to clarify gambling law in such a way as to make payment processing from online gambling sites explicitly illegal. The current law states that marketing and mediating online gaming services are illegal. The proposed amendment would specifically define “payment processing” as a mediation of online gaming services.
The new definition would be applied to the Norwegian Lottery Act, Totalisator Act and Gaming Act.
Companies would then be prohibited from processing financial transactions for online casinos, poker, lottery, and horse racing or sports betting games.
The proposed amendment will be in the public comment process through February 13, at which point it will move to Parliament, and could be active by mid-2008.
