The Irish Poker Championship is over and has been won by an Irishman. Jude Ainsworth, 28, of Claregalway, took the top prize of €180,000 and a crystal trophy home with him from Galway City earlier this week.
“It doesn’t get much better than this,” proclaimed Ainsworth after his win. “To say that we are going to sink a few pints is an understatement! I couldn’t ask for much more than this, I’ve had great support all the way through. I was planning taking a break after my PhD at GNUIG in Galway. This makes everything a lot easier!”
Ainsworth defeated 297 players, less than the projected 400+ originally anticipated for the championship, and thus won less money than the projected $1 million prize. However, the Irish Poker Championship is still being considered a rousing success for poker in Ireland.
Final table:
Keith McFadden: 696,000
Jude Ainsworth: 485,000
Trevor Dineen: 412,000
Michael Moran: 374,000
Tommy Watson: 296,000
Bernard Brady: 294,000
Glen McCabe: 235,000
Michael McCool: 222,000
