Less than two weeks after being notified that it had not met the mark for Gambling Commission white list requirements, Antigua and Barbados is optimistic about approval. Following a meeting yesterday with UK Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe, Antigua’s Minister of Finance Dr. Errol Cort expressed optimism about his country’s chances of being added to the UK white list. Antigua’s application to be approved for advertisement of its online gaming services in the United Kingdom had recently been met with a notice of denial.
“I was happy to learn that very little stands in the way of our approval for whitelisting, and I think I can express confidence that this issue will be resolved favourably in the very near future,” Dr. Cort said in The Antigua Sun.
“We are acknowledged global leaders in the regulation of this industry,” said Kaye McDonald, Antigua’s Director of Gaming, and member of the delegation assembled to discuss the whitelisting with the UK’s Gambling Commission. “Our standards are the highest in the world and we view the whitelisting as important to demonstrate our commitment to the highest standards in the supervision and oversight of this dynamic industry.” Other members of the delegation were attorney Mark Mendel, gaming regulation consultant Alan Pedley, Deputy Administrator of the Financial Services Regulatory Commission Trevor Mathurin, and UK High Commissioner Dr. Carl Roberts.
“We are extremely encouraged by the reception we received from Minister Sutcliffe and his staff,” Minister Cort observed.
“This meeting shows what governments can accomplish by working cooperatively and openly to resolve issues between them. We appreciate Minister Sutcliffe’s interest in this matter and look forward to concluding this matter shortly.”
Neither party shared details regarding what steps Antigua must undertake in order to meet the Gambling Commission’s requirements for whitelisting.
