Nenad Medic became the first bracelet winner of this year’s World Series of Poker by besting a final table full of well-known players in event No. 1, $10,000 Pot Limit Hold’em World Championship.
The final table included Andy Bloch, Kathy Liebert, Mike Sexton, Phil Laak, Patrik Antonius, Mike “SowersUNCC” Sowers, Chris Bell and online specialist Amit “amit316” Makhija.
The win was Medic’s first at the WSOP, and his fourth cash. First prize was worth $794,112.
According to Bluff Magazine:
Medic started the final table second in chips and while there were fireworks early the 25-year old Canadian stayed patient waiting for his opportunity to come. With play three-handed Medic found himself all-in with both Bloch and Liebert. Bloch helds pocket nines, short-stacked Liebert held pocket sixes and Medic was well ahead with pocket queens. A third queen hit the flop ending the suspense.
With the chip lead heading into heads-up play, Medic put away Bloch on a hand with a board of 8h 5s 4h. The money went in after that flop, with Bloch holding 99 and Medic holding 75h for a gutshot straight flush draw. Medic hit his flush on the turn and survived the river for the win.
In other WSOP news, event No. 2, $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em, became the largest preliminary event ever at the WSOP with more than 4,000 players.
