The House in New Hampshire passed a bill that levies a tax on poker games being run to benefit charities.
The 199-125 House vote follows an earlier 16-7 vote to pass the state Senate.
According to pokerpages.com:
A 3% tax would apply in tournaments where the playing chips have no monetary value. A 10% tax would apply if the chips have a monetary value.
Charities would maintain their cut of the take; the state’s share of the tax comes from the operators, who insisted that the maximum bet be raised to enable them to remain in business while shouldering the tax.
The state’s governor is expected to sign the bill, which is estimated to create $2 million in revenue for the state, into law.
The bill would also change the minimum bet allowed in poker games from $2 to $4.
