The $25,000 Heads-Up Omaha championship on Full Tilt Poker this past weekend attracted some of the biggest names in the poker world. The event brought in a plethora of Omaha’s biggest cash game players and online tournament specialists, all hoping to get a shot at winning the $560,000 first-place prize.
The action was so big that Full Tilt actually had to actually dedicate 2 days to it just to get it all finished. Day 1 saw 56 players get eliminated, with the remaining 8 entrants all making the money and guaranteeing themselves at least $96,000. Two of the final 8 were definitely no strangers to high stakes Omaha. Newly-signed Full Tilt Pro Patrik Antonious and Di “urindanger” Dang have frequently going to war with each at the $200/$400 PLO game, so it was no surprise to see they were going to play each other heads-up in the Final Four bracket.
Dang and Antonious would push each other to the brink several times during their match, so much so that it would actually coax Patrik’s young counterpart to offer up a deal. When Antonious declined, the action seemed to sway back into Patrik’s advantage, and he would use that momentum to overtake Di Dang to advance to the final.
The final match would see another high stakes Omaha fraternity member enter the ring against the Antonious. “Slaktarn” would run over his opponent in the semifinal to get the chance to play against one of the game’s elite for $560,000 and the title of heads-up Omaha champion. Play between the two was quite the opposite of their normal aggressive styles early on in their match, but as they settled into their rhythms, the urge to get uber-aggro once again would come out!
On the final hand, it would be Antonious making an ill-timed push with an overpair of Aces and a straight draw after a J-6-7 flop. An instacall by “Slaktarn” saw him turn over J J Q 8 for top set. The turn and river bricked out to the dismay of Antonious, who would be sent home in 2nd place with a $320,000 consolation prize. “Slaktarn” would pocket $560,000 for his 1st place efforts, and his payday was actually bigger than the NBC Heads-Up National Championship AND the WSOP Heads-Up Championship - primiarily due to the huge $25,000 buyin.
