In what can only be described as a competition to see who has the biggest … um, tournament lobby, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker duked it out yesterday in a battle to see who could set the ‘world record’ for the largest online poker tournament.

We use the quotes above because the record is a bit of a misnomer - larger online poker tournament than either attempt have been played in the past. However, something can count as a Guinness World Record (tm, etc) only if it’s submitted to Guinness and also observed by them.

Bit of a racket, we agree.

Anyhow, Full Tilt Poker went for 50,000 players at a $5 buy in. They got to 50k, and breo40 took it down for about 45k. PokerStars set the bar higher, at 65,000 players with a $1 buy in, and hit it easily. The results for PokerStars:

1 004 license, $13,000
2 I_SCORPIO_I, $11,000
3 nawyk, $9,000
4 papadragon95, $7,500
5 tjopsjoap, $6,000
6 Vortex2, $4,500
7 Bigbob0630, $3,000
8 FrankyFoReal, $1,750
9 caska_137, $1,250
10 BBRRAASSIILL, $825

Generally Stars and Full Tilt Poker don’t engage in this direct sort of promotional pissing contest, so here’s hoping this marks the start of even more ridiculous and outlandish site-to-site confrontations that will ultimately benefit the players more than anyone.
