There’s historically been a significant tension in California between tribal casinos and non-indian gambling entities such as racetracks and card clubs. Competition for the gambling dollar of Californians, along with unique regulations for tribal casinos that allow them to offer a wider variety of games to customers, have often placed the two groups on opposing sides of various legislative and public battles.

One issue they can apparently agree on? Regulated, legalized online poker in California.

That’s according to a story in the Sacramento Bee, which claims that powerful interests on both sides are now working together to build an infrastructure that would support online poker in California and lobbying for legislation that would sanction such a network.

Intrastate poker in California is an idea that’s been batted about for a few years now, but it appears that the recent economic downturn - which has been uniquely disastrous for California - may have created the perfect climate for the idea to transition into a reality.

The SB reports that a current proposal envisions a cooperative arrangement between California’s tribal casinos and card clubs that would create a new corporation to develop and manage the poker network. The Morongo tribe has reportedly pledged to front half of the $10 million start up cost for the venture.
