It’s been a bit since an unknown at high stakes games online got forum tongues wagging, but there’s a new screen name on the nosebleed scene that’s been lighting up the tables and various threads: Martonas.

There’s been a lot of talk about the possible identity of the player who has been playing the highest Full Tilt has to offer. It’s not a new name - PokerTableRatings has over 25k hands of no limit on the player at stakes ranging from 5/10 to 500/1000 - but over the last week or so, whoever the player is has been putting in a ton of hands against some of the toughest names in online poker.

The most common speculation on the person behind the avatar is that Martonas is an account shared by Martin De Knjiff and Jonas “Nebuchad” Danielsson. In support of the theory: it would be a match on the Swedish origin of the account, and the screen name is an amalgam of the first names of the two men. Those two bits aside, there’s nothing solid to confirm that connection.

Another apparently credible possibility was raised by poster Baracus on 2+2: “Rumours say it’s swedish footballer Marcus Allbäck, now playing in the swedish elite division but with short spells in Villa among others. He has been playing high stakes poker for a few years now on eurosites, under the name MajesticM, B-B and others.”

Whoever it is, they seem to have a high tolerance for swings. The last 48 hours saw a nearly $3 million dollar downswing on the account after marathon sessions versus Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan, Cole South, Brian Hastings and others, including a hand where Martonas and Dwan built a 600k+ pot that Dwan took down with a rivered straight.

It’s important to note that we’re talking about a 600k+ pot in a no limit holdem hand, not an omaha hand. Despite that loss, estimates put Martonas’ combined PLO and NLHE wins for August at over $1.5 million.
